edit /etc/default/grub and change the following line;
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="text"
then run
sudo update-grub
startx will start the gui
disable-gui-on-boot
